Wolf Alice Break New Ground with Dazzling New Single “Bloom Baby Bloom”
Wolf Alice return in bold fashion with their latest single, “Bloom Baby Bloom” — a track that signals a thrilling new chapter for the band. After a four-year wait since their acclaimed album Blue Weekend, this new release proves it was time well spent.
While Blue Weekend saw the group dip into their folk roots on songs like “Safe From Heartbreak (If You Never Fall in Love),” “Bloom Baby Bloom” pushes them into uncharted sonic territory — and they sound utterly at home. This is a striking evolution, and perhaps their most ambitious single yet.
The song kicks off with bright piano chords and playful handclaps, giving off a deceptively lighthearted vibe — but that mood shifts the moment Ellie Rowsell’s vocals come in. Her voice has long been a standout feature of Wolf Alice’s sound, but here it takes center stage in a fresh, commanding way. In a recent interview, Rowsell shared: “I wanted a rock song that highlights performance — to sing like Axl Rose, but about the experience of being a woman. I used to hide behind the guitar, maybe as a way to dodge the ‘girl singer in a band’ cliché, but this time, I wanted to treat my voice as the main instrument.”
That choice pays off. There’s a rawness and liberation in her delivery that matches the spirit of the track. The music video echoes that same freedom, visually mirroring the emotional highs and defiance captured in the song.
Rowsell’s frustration boils over in the pre-chorus: “Look at me trying to play it hard / I’m so sick and tired of playing it hard,” she snarls with controlled fury. Then comes the chorus — sweeping, cinematic, and cathartic — as she belts, “But I’ll bloom, baby, bloom / Watch me, yeah, you’ll see just what I’m worth,” with operatic force.
“Bloom Baby Bloom” isn’t just a return — it’s a reinvention. It hints at a band stepping into their most fearless and self-assured era yet. Their forthcoming album The Clearing, set for release on 29 August, promises to be one of the year’s most compelling.
