Divorce Open 2025 with the Ambitious and Expansive “Pill”
Nottingham alt-indie four-piece Divorce kick off the year with “Pill,” a sweeping, genre-defying single that reinforces their reputation as one of the UK’s most exciting new acts. The track arrives ahead of their debut album Drive to Goldenhammer, set for release on March 7 via Gravity/Capitol, and follows the critical success of singles “All My Freaks” and “Antarctica,” both of which earned BBC 6 Music A-list status.
At five minutes long, “Pill” unfolds like a mini-epic. It begins with jittery, tightly wound guitars, then gradually expands into lush string sections, a sparse piano interlude, and rich alt-country harmonies. These shifting elements build toward a cinematic crescendo, highlighting the band’s command of dynamics and emotional weight. Divorce have always been hard to pin down, and “Pill” only deepens their mystique—each twist feels both unexpected and perfectly placed.
According to co-vocalist and guitarist Tiger Cohen-Towell, “Pill” was born during a pivotal time in Glasgow and draws on her queer identity, channeling the joy of being seen—whether in love or in creative partnership. The track’s freeform structure mirrors its emotional origin, shaped by the band’s collaborative spirit and openness to experimentation.
With “Pill,” Divorce continue to push boundaries while staying grounded in raw, personal storytelling. It’s a bold preview of what’s to come on Drive to Goldenhammer—an album already shaping up to be one of 2025’s most anticipated. The band will take their richly layered sound on the road this spring, with a UK and Ireland headline tour that includes sold-out dates in Bristol and Leeds. As a standalone release, “Pill” is a thrilling testament to Divorce’s growing artistry—and a compelling hint at what lies ahead.
