Russell Stewart filmed his video for track “Inward” in Glasgow’s The Pipe Factory. The former industrial building is now one of the city’s key creative hubs, offering barren, rustic expanses to host resplendent creative endeavours. Its potential clearly isn’t lost on Stewart, who filmed not just “Inward” but two other music videos there in one weekend. “They all have the bare, sort of industrial look to them from that stunning building,” the artist explains. “Inward” documents being clasped from dark moments by friends, and in its visuals we see Russell emerge from the building’s darker corners into settings where light creeps in.
The visuals offer the alt-soul savant the optimum expanse from which to deliver the tender soundscape of “Inward”, which draws on influences from the frontrunners of contemporary alt-soul, including, Nao, Lianne La Havas and Nick Hakim. Nuanced and reflective, “Inwards” exemplifies Stewart’s dexterity for affecting musical expression melded with dynamic sonics, with electronic embellishments interlaced with the poignancy of his vocal. Fans don’t have to wait long to be nourished with more Russell Stewart music too, with his EP “Into View” on the way, plus a headline hometown gig at the prestigious Glasgow venue King Tuts on 18th November.Head below to enter the world of Russell Stewart, right now, by watching the “Inward” video below…
