“Don’t you feel like loving you?” Butter TM sings on self-love celebration “Helium”. The songwriter, Butter (Dido, Celine Dion, James Arthur) met Finnish producer Perttu in the studio, where their bond was harnessed by their shared love of disco music. Since, the pair have spent two years hopping between Helsinki and Portugal crafting their debut EP together. The first taste of which comes with “Helium” – a suave disco cut hybridising elements of the genre’s past with today.
A clarion call to love oneself, the track was inspired by Butter’s contrasting experience of living in Portugal compared to where she was used to, in cities like London and Berlin. “It made me dig into the disco phenomena of feeling good,” Butter explains. “Big cities wrapped up in green smoke, where noses are tinted white, money evaporates like powder, sex sells on local buses in polyester suits,” she continues about her time in the British and German capitals. The result was a colder sound, however, furnished with experiences in the Portugese sun, the Butter TM EP marks “a lighter, feminine, and empowered” turning point.
